The Unionville, Indiana, community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Hunter Michael Chitwood, an 18-year-old young man remembered for his humility, gentle nature, quick wit, strong work ethic, and unwavering loyalty. Hunter passed away on October 6, 2026, leaving his family, friends, girlfriend, and everyone whose life he touched grieving an extraordinary young person gone too soon.
Born on April 21, 2008, Hunter was the treasured son of Bridgette and Clinton Chitwood. His family remembers him as someone whose contagious smile and unmistakable laughter could brighten the lives of those around him. Although his life was tragically short, he accomplished much and built meaningful relationships that will remain part of his lasting legacy.
Hunter was a proud member of the Bloomington High School North (BHSN) Cougar football family. He played football for four years and served as a starting tight end for two seasons. His dedication to the sport earned him the 2025 Cougar Award. He also participated in the BHSN Student Athletic Board and the Cougar Leaders Program.
During his senior year, Hunter embraced opportunities to participate in Unified Cornhole, Bowling, and Track. With the encouragement and support of his teacher, Brooke Fleener, he enjoyed being involved in programs that fostered teamwork, inclusion, and school community.
Academically and professionally, Hunter demonstrated the same determination that characterized his other pursuits. He excelled in the Hoosier Hills Career Center program, where he received the 2026 Outstanding Welding Student Award. He graduated with an impressive overall GPA of 3.925, an achievement that reflected his commitment to learning and personal growth.
Hunter was also a competitive motocross racer who shared his love of dirt biking with his brother, Tucker, for more than a decade. One of the highlights of his racing career came in 2024, when he won a regional qualifier in the 250C class at RedBud MX in Buchanan, Michigan.
That victory earned Hunter automatic entry into the Loretta Lynn Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship. Competing against riders from across the country, he finished 31st out of 42 competitors in the 250C class and 17th out of 42 in the 450C class. His brother Tucker supported him throughout the weeklong competition, serving as his head mechanic.
Their shared passion for motorcycles represented more than a sport. It was a bond built through countless hours of preparation, mechanical work, competition, and family support.
Hunter’s mechanical abilities were equally important at C&C Equipment, the family business where he had worked throughout his life. His talents as a mechanic and his willingness to work hard made him a valued part of the business. His family’s connection to the company was especially meaningful: the year Hunter was born, 2008, was also the year the business acquired its first large batch of surplus trucks.
His absence will be deeply felt by his family and colleagues, who will miss not only his mechanical skills but also his presence and dedication.
Away from school, work, and racing, Hunter enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, and repairing his Ford vehicles. These hobbies reflected his practical abilities, love of the outdoors, and enthusiasm for hands-on projects.
He was especially fortunate to have a lifelong best friend in Jake Flynn of Bloomington, whose friendship extended from preschool through the present. Hunter also shared a cherished relationship with his girlfriend, Bella Bowling, of Bloomington, Indiana.
Above all, Hunter was a beloved son and brother. The bond he shared with Tucker was strengthened through their years of motocross racing and their common interests. His family, friends, and loved ones will remember the everyday moments, shared adventures, laughter, and memories that made him such an important part of their lives.
Hunter is survived by his parents, Bridgette and Clinton Chitwood, and his brother, Tucker Chitwood, all of Unionville, Indiana.
He is also survived by his grandparents, Mary and Greg Chitwood of Unionville, and Rebecca Stanger Fulk; his aunt and uncle, Amanda and Scott Richardson of Bloomington; his cousins Henry Cain, Morgan Richardson, and Anthony Richardson of Bloomington; and his aunt and uncle, Angel and Brandon Fulk of Lafayette, along with his cousins Jordan Fulk and Payton Fulk.
He was preceded in death by his beloved grandfather, Bradley Fulk.
His extended family, friends, classmates, teammates, and colleagues join his immediate family in mourning a loss that is difficult to put into words.

A visitation was scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A traditional funeral service, conducted by Matt Crosby, was scheduled for noon, with burial to follow at the Chitwood Family Cemetery, located at 8636 E. State Road 45 in Unionville, Indiana.

Hunter’s death is a profound loss for a family and community that watched him grow into a talented, hardworking, and compassionate young man. From the football field to the motocross track, from the welding program to the family business, he approached his interests with commitment and enthusiasm.
While his life ended far too soon, the impact he made on those around him will endure through the memories he created, the friendships he nurtured, and the family traditions he helped build.
The circumstances surrounding Hunter’s death have been described in the supplied account as an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. Such details should be confirmed through an official statement before being presented as established fact.
